Company history

The history of the company dates back to 1964. In September of that year, Subterra performed the first blast-off within a trial excavation of the drinking water tunnel from Želivka to Prague. This was the launch of the organisation which had initially been a part of Příbram Uranium Mining Enterprise, but later it was named the Želivka branch within the same enterprise. The branch subsequequently developed into National Enterprise of Underground Engineering Construction before being renamed again as Mining Construction of Uranium Industry Trust, then more recently to Subterra State Enterprise which finally became Subterra joint stock company as we know today. The company was established on 1st April 1992 as a result of privatisation.

Since then it has broadened its activities across a wide range of further engineering construction areas, as well as into residential, industrial and public construction. Underground and transport constructions represent the largest share of the company business.

Subterra ranks among the top ten major construction companies which were formed after the democratisation of the country during the early 1990s. This has been due to the company’s tradition, technical expertise, economic performance and stability in its workforce. In 2004 Subterra became a member of the DDM Group when its major shareholder acquired the majority stake of the company. This has further strengthened its position on the Czech construction market.

The quality of the company’s production is guaranteed by the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certificates. This proves that not only the quality is main concern of Subterra a.s. but that it is also focused on the environment and health and safety at work.

A long list of successfully completed constructions (often very unique) shows Subterra as a trustworthy and reliable partner for investors and contractors.
