Spitzenberg Tunnel, A44 Highway in Germany

02/2017–03/2023

Client:
DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstrassenplanungs – und – bau GmbH
Designer:
ILF Beratende Ingenieure GmbH
Contractor:
BeMo Tunnelling GmbH and Subterra a.s.

The tunnel is located in the Hesse region on the highway A44 between Eisenach–Kassel. The project included a construction of a twin tube highway tunnel in the length of 600 metres, and two tunnel cross-passage tubes ten metres long were constructed. New Austrian Tunnelling Method was used for the excavation. The northern portal is located in a very unstable rock environment so the first hundred meters were carried out by mechanical disintegration of rock under the protection of the micropile canopy system. The works included blasting works. Part of the project was the stabilization of the 50 meters high cut in Lerchenberg slope at the northern portal. A three-dimensional network system was used.
