Underground Utility Tunnel Hlávkův Bridge in Prague

09/2016–12/2018

Client:
Hlavní město Praha
Designer:
INGUTIS, spol. s r. o.
Contractor:
Subterra a.s. and HOCHTIEF CZ a.s.

The aim of the project was to relocate all the utilities from the structure of Hlávkův Bridge to the underground utility tunnel so that the bridge could be repaired. The underground utility tunnel is 418 metres long and runs under the Vltava river between Těšnov and Holešovice across Štvanice Island. It interconnects two existing utility tunnels - RNLS and SPHM. A demanding excavation in three different rock environments took place mostly using blasting works. The part of the project are also two excavated technical chambers, four round shafts and one side tunnel at Štvanice Island. The final lining of the tunnel (3 metres wide and 4,5 metres high) was made of waterproofing concrete. The project also included the installation of technological equipment and a climbing lift.

The project was awarded by the Czech Chamber of Chartered Engineers and Technicians Engaged in Construction as the Building of the Year 2019.
