Client:
DB-Netz AG
Designer:
DB ProjektBau GmbH
Contractor:
Subterra a.s.

The Alter Kaiser-Wilhelm tunnel was completed in 1879 and is 4,2 kilometres long. It is located in Rhineland-Palatinate between the towns Cochem and Edinger-Eller. The project involved the conversion of the historical double-track tunnel into the single-track tunnel which complements the newly built parallel tunnel that was already in use. The tunnels were interconnected with eight cross-passages. The most challenging part was reprofiling of the existing stone lining, securing it with sprayed concrete and cement grouting and a deepening of the tunnel invert. At the end, the final waterproof concrete lining was constructed. The historical stone portals have been preserved.
