The purpose of the complete reconstruction of one of the most important railway junctions in Hungary was to increase the speed to a maximum of 100 km/h and to create a modern passenger environment. The works included an upgrade of the track substructure, drainage, modernization of overhead line, safety equipment and refurbishment of other permanent objects. New noise barriers were built to protect adjacent residential areas. In addition, three island platforms with an underpass were built, an overpass connecting the railway station with the bus station was constructed and a partial reconstruction of the listed station building was carried out. Because the track was bombed during World War II, the construction was accompanied by extensive pyrotechnic survey.
